A few weeks back we invited eMTB coaching along to one of our E-Bikeshop Owners Club rides. Impressed with the passion shared with the guys in eBike tuition and general electric mountain biking as a whole, we decided to team up to bring eMTB coaching to the south of England. Alex Smith, the lead instructor and owner of eMTB Coaching is a professional MIAS level 3 mountain bike instructor has been mountain biking since the age of 20. Developing his mountain bike skills over the past years, he decided it was time for his first eMTB. Alex noticed that riding a eBike was a totally different experience to regular mountain biking. This is where he adapted his existing skill set to work with eBikes and formed the UK's very first electric mountain bike coaching company. Riding with Alex proved he has the skills to develop eBike owners riding styles further to create a more confident and enjoyable experience. Why not come and give it a go and see how you can develop your riding?. It also doubles up as a great day out riding. Win win! The UK Electric Bike Company based in Farnham (Surrey), won a Scoot Headline Award in a campaign to find Britain’s top, most successful companies. Scoot is the UK's leading online business hub, hosting millions of businesses across the country and is the network that powers the business directory's for The Sun, Mirror, The Independent & touchlocal. Late last year over 6 million UK companies were invited to enter in the awards. With the judges looking for one main thing - a success story. E-Bikeshop bagged the Silver Headline Award in Retail Nationally for 2015. Managing Director, Martin Brown said: We are honoured to win with such a prestigious award. The company has grown so much, just even in the last 18 months. It's nice to see the hard work of all the team push the company to where it is today E-Bikeshop competed against hundreds of other nominations in the National Awards, and were presented with their trophy and certificate at a glittering presentation ceremony in London Transport Museum, Covent Garden, London on April 20th 2015. Martin added: If I am honest, when we got the letter to attend the ceremony, we knew we had been nominated for an award. I was thinking an accreditation or maybe even a regional award. On the day, when our company came up on the big screen behind as the Silver winner in The National Retail Awards I was a little taken aback! As a result of this Scoot Headline Award success, E-Bikeshop have now also been nominated to attend The National Business Leaders awards, the leading work of reference on successful business techniques and best practice, so that others can follow their lead and learn from their achievement. The UK Electric Bike Company will be returning to London later in the year to become a National Business Leader of 2015. The prestigious prize giving ceremony takes place in the Houses of Parliament later on in 2015, so expect more news on this soon.
After eight-plus months of planning, a gruelling fitness regime and a flight from Australia to London, Gary and Rachel Corbett’s - e-Bike Cycle Tourists - plan to set a new world e-bike long distance record took a major step forward at the weekend with the delivery of arguably the record attempt's most important ingredient – two Haibike Trekking RX e-bikes from e-bikeshop.co.uk. Following a comprehensive rundown on the use of the bikes from e-bike shop owner Martin Brown and the addition to the bikes of various after market accessories necessary for a crack at the coveted world record of 16,000-plus kilometres, it was finally time to do what Gary and Rachel had been waiting so long for – to go riding. While it was with a fair degree of trepidation that they climbed aboard their new Haibike's for their first ever ride on a new generation e-bike, it only took two or three laps of the e-bike shop car park to be blown away by the performance of their new machines. What a revelation it was – basically there is no other way to describe the experience of riding the Haibike xDuro Trekking RX than ‘f=*^%#g amazing’. Talk about impossible to wipe the smiles off their faces. Power, smoothness of ride, looks, technology and ease of use – the Haibike Trekking e-bike has it all and more. But doing laps around a car park is one thing, what would the bikes be like to ride on a longer, more demanding outing where the electrical assist is really tested out? It was with that thought in mind that they set out on a perfect autumn day for a ride around the Surrey district to give their Haibike's a real workout. You name the challenge and the Haibike's were handed it. Pushed hard in Eco, Tour, Sport and Turbo modes the e-bikes never missed a beat. With a full range of 27 gears to choose from in conjunction with assistance from the abovementioned e-bike modes, there wasn't a hill that posed even the slightest of problems. Such was the smoothness of the ride and the power of the electrical assistance, that Mrs e-Bike Cycle Tourist in all seriousness claimed that she felt like she should be buckling up her seat belt! And better still for someone who worried that the bikes were going to be too “high tech” to ride when she first saw them, she was in fact delighted with just how easy they were to use. Gear changes posed no problems, the upright riding position proved extremely comfortable – an important consideration when planning to cycle 20,000 or so kilometres over 12 months of cycling – and with the help of the electrical assist the kilometres just flew past. Also, given how hard Mr e-Bike Cycle Tourist’s Haibike was pushed over the maiden 58 kilometre ride in all four modes of operation – in contrast Mrs e-Bike Cycle Tourist mainly stuck to Eco mode – there was still 45% battery life left at the end of the day. With battery usage a major consideration in the planning for the e-bike record attempt given the daily 75 to 100km target, 58km with 45% battery usage at the end of an undulating and often steep ride was good news indeed. The bottom line with just three days to go until the e-Bike Cycle Tourists head off from the e-bikeshop.co.uk’s sales center in Farnham, Surrey on their world record ride is that they are confident their new Haibike xDuro Trekking RX e-bikes are more than up to the task. With just days to go before the e-Bike Cycle Tourists head off from Farnham in Surrey on Thursday, April 23 in their attempt to set a new world e-bike long distance record over 12-plus months of cycling! Follow the Haibiking journey and stay up-to-date with further reviews here on the e-bikeshop blog!
On Sunday 13th April the E-bikeshop Owners Club got set for a great days riding at Swinley Forest. The club is filled with a great mix of people, from ladies to gents of all ages. The main aim is to enjoy eBiking in the UK and most of all have FUN with fellow eBikers! We all met mid morning in the car park for a quick ride brief, although mid morning, the sun was already out in full glory for what was set to be a fantastic day! It wasn't long before we were hitting the first trail, warming up on the mild blue run before joining the slightly more technical red route. On this ride we were also joined by Alex & Nick from EMTB Coaching, offering some great practical trail advice. Thanks to Nick for looking after Kirsty - One of our newest members. The trails were fast and smooth thanks to the great weather. The slight rain fall the day before meant that there was little dust, allowing us to power on and keep the pace going. Due to one small mechanical, we stopped for 10 minutes (to replace a broken chain link). Two other riders flew out of the trail, one stopped and looked at my eBike. 'Thats Cheating' he mumbled whilst pointing at the Bosch motor. I looked at him and said 'Wouldn't say that here mate, there's more of us than there is you'. As he looked sheepishly around and realised he was in the middle of the E-bikeshop Owners ride and there was 14 of us dotted around them... Brilliant! We gave him a quick demonstration and allowed him to go for a quick blast, which followed by a smile, a few questions and then the question - 'Where can I get one of these?' It's a common occurrence us eBikers have to go through. In fact I must have counted at least 5 people that had a go whilst on our ride.. 30 seconds on the eMTB and they 'get it!' We did stop at 'Jump Valley' for a short while for some 'air time' and general eBike nattering. Unfortunately we did have one fall here from fellow club member Bernie, however due to his new body armour (purchased the day before) he was back up and smiling again in no time. The eBikes certainly attract a lot of attention whilst out riding. So many people asking, is this a demo day? No! We replied - We are all eBike owners. After approx. 18 miles of trail bashing the ride concluded with much needed tea and coffee at the café on-site at Swinley forest. To sum it up? What a great day, joined by a great bunch of people, great trails, fantastic weather and of course plenty of smiles. The feedback was tremendous, every single rider had a great time. That's what it's all about! The E-Bikeshop Owners Club is a closed group of riders, if you have purchased a eBike from us and want to get involved, please get in touch.. I have now had my Lapierre Overvolt FS 900 for 10 days, in that time I have ridden 135.2 miles, to get used to the bike. I can’t keep off the thing!!! First Impressions At first I was initially upset with the distance achieved from a fully charged battery 18 miles, but this was riding on my own, up some awesome uphill off road, (in TURBO mode), of which I could never have managed before an E Bike. Over Easter I rode with one of my friends over some of the South Downs way, we did 27 miles, averaged 10 mph and I still had 1 bar of battery left, it soon became apparent I ride too fast when on my own hence poor mileage. See this Strava picture below and you can see why, averaging nearly 18mph, I don't even do that on a Road Bike! Why I love it? This Lapierre FS 900 eBike has allowed me once again to ride off road, and not worry if a massive climb appears, they are no trouble now. I have found lanes and trails that I have never discovered before... I am 47 years old, had my first MTB in 1988 a Kona Fire Mountain, back when I was 20 I could ride all day, never noticed hills etc, but now I am 15 ½ stone and old, things have changed. (lost 3Lb in last 10 days, another positive) I have also started commuting 17 miles each way to work on the eBike, what a great way to start and end the day, I have always read about people that do this, and how energized they feel, well with help from Bosch - that guy is now me and it is superb! I love this E concept so much, Martin was very patient with me as these things are not cheap (pay for what you get), and it took me a while to take the plunge. eBikeshop held a demo day, which I attended, Great day!!! which was really the day I made my mind up, this is for me, never before have I had such good service from a bicycle shop, matched only when I purchased a BMW motorbike. Conclusion If you are trying to make your mind up, get in touch with me, ride mine, take it up the most uphill piece of off road that has always destroyed you, you will fly up it, then you will be reaching for your cash. Up hills can be FUN... honest! Not only am I obtaining great times uphill, I am also smashing all my PB’s downhill with this Lapierre, what a bike. E Bike is the way forward, you're cheating yourself if you don't at least try one.... Best Wishes to all at E-Bike Shop & THANKS! With thanks to Danny for this fantastic review, you can view the full specification of this bike here: Lapierre Overvolt FS900 2015

Great to hear feedback from our customers. This one in particular was so happy with his previous Haibike, he decided to take the plunge and go for a better equipped model. Where it started? A few weeks ago I decided to explore the idea of changing my Haibike pro to the latest version, why? I love my Haibike used it lots but found its 120mm travel a bit quick for me, I need 180mm….. and the new dashboard…. and the yellow wheels….. and the look… and and and (trying to convince myself).. I booked a slot with Martin and he took me through all points of the Haibike xDuro NDURO PRO 2015 eBike, (I would like to add that Martin rides these bikes and really knows the bikes you can be confident with his advice) it was loads of money but I fell in love again, so parted with my money, I also purchased the Thule bike rack. Thoughts so far on the rack The Thule bike rack - worth every bit of the £400+ price tag, super easy to attach to car, super easy to put 2 bikes on and feels super safe on the car, I would have no hesitation in taking a few bikes across the country and as they lock to the car would be happy to take on a camping trip (I would take additional security and remove removable parts from the bike overnight). Now to the Haibike NDURO PRO itself First the good Really great to ride, the geometry is spot on, a relaxed turn thanks to the 180mm travel (just what I wanted), so many settings on the suspension but feels pretty good as is, the new dashboard (great but had a few issues on setting up see below), the 11 speed, positive gear changes and a great range suitable for every type of ride I can think of, brakes are excellent, Seat dropper excellent and it looks superb… As I previously stated I have the old Haibike pro everything that was great on that bike is still great (I have to sell the oldie but keep finding excuses no delay advertising it)... The not so great Nothing with the bike just minor annoyances, setting up the Nyon, what a pain, it does not accept my address so would not let me complete the setup, I had to invent an address (I live less than 50miles from the shop), to open up the maps there is a charge of £12 approx. (single payment for lifetime updates) but to do this you need a mobile device (it would not work on any device that I own so I had to use my sons phone), without purchasing the full maps the GPS works OK but rides are not recorded, if you have a dongle fitted all ride and map data will be incorrect (I knew this at time of purchase but wanted the dongle). The reaction of E-bikes with other cyclists - on one of my rides I saw a friend who used to be heavily into road racing, I put him on my bike explained the simple controls and off we went, he returned 10 minutes or so later with a smile that went from ear to ear, his words: I could never see the point of E-bikes but now I have ridden one I get it I replied: But of course E-bikes are cheating and not for keeping fit He agreed so then I asked him why he was sweating and breathing heavily, to that he replied: I'm knackered, was that the bike or me doing the work I decided to keep him guessing… Advice to others I guess the biggest issue and will probably only be an issue for me is the saddle. Since I can remember I suffer with pain when riding so much that I can hardly sit for a few days after a ride, after trying everything from padded shorts to saddle position to new saddles I was convinced it was something I would have to live with. Until I visited my local cycle shop to get another pair of shorts (more padding), I explained the problem and was given an explanation of the cause, I had my sitting bones measured and advised on a saddle to fit, £70 for a new saddle and I’m in saddle heaven no more pain. A lot of words to get to my issue, when we pay thousands of pounds for a bike should we not as a routing ensure the saddle is a correct fit, I was unaware of saddle sizes and the importance as are most people that I cycle with (we are not club members and don’t have anyone to give us advice) just hoping that these few words may help someone avoid the years of pain that I have gone through. Thanks so much to Pete for his kind words, written in his own time, it's always great to hear real world feedback and it's also nice for other to read in advance. Bosch have been working hard to create a user friendly 'on the fly' charger for their Bosch eBike battery packs. Today we announce the new 12v cigarette socket charger available. No longer do you have to use an inverter to charge your Bosch eBike battery pack in your car. The feedback from more serious customers to Bosch was that they would prefer the ability to be able to charge Bosch eBike batteries from their car. This is particularly useful for midday charges out on the trail or those who wish to charge their battery packs whilst out on the move. The neat new charger works seamlessly with later Bosch Active & Performance batteries, both 300Wh, 400Wh, frame mount & pannier rack mounted power packs. Its the same size as the original small Bosch charger but instead of the mains head on one end it features a direct plug 'n' play 12v socket to fit directly into every vehicles cigarette lighter socket. The cabling is also a lot shorter as you don't need so much length to reach the bike, you can tuck the battery away inside the car whilst on charge. The small unit weighs just shy of 800g and is easily stowable. For older Bosch Classic+ batteries, this new travel charger can also be used in conjunction with the Bosch Classic+ to Performance adapter here. We expect charging to take a little longer than when using ordinary 240v mains. Interestingly the new charger also features an internal discharge protection system for the vehicles battery to prevent it from completely discharging. Also we will take this opportunity to advise all customers to not leave their battery in direct sunlight, especially in the coming summer months, cars can heat up quite extravagantly and leaving your power pack in direct sunlight will cause further heat. Its not good for the battery to charge abnormally hot. So we suggest placing the battery on charge out of the way of direct sunlight and just leave the window ajar to allow a little breeze to flow through the car. In stock today! Chances are, if you're reading this, you've already got an e-bike or you’re doing the necessary research and in the market for one. The punchline, therefore, is the Haibike AllMtn Pro 27.5 is an excellent machine and you should buy one! User Review - By Ian Coleman If that’s all the persuasion you need to spend your money, then no need to read the rest of this – however if you, like me, tremble at the thought of spending £5.5k on a pushbike, then read on. If you wish to be regaled with stories of how I've conquered Snowdon on the Haibike or how I rip up all the trails at all the national bike parks every weekend – you're going to be disappointed. Truth is, I'm a middle aged, tall, fairly heavy, boring man, who doesn't drive but likes mountain bikes. The key part in the last bit is that I don't drive (because of eyesight issues) so to be able to get around on a powered vehicle of any sort, without fear of being nicked still holds quite an appeal. Also, because I don't drive, I can't simply throw the bike in or on the car and shoot off somewhere in Wales for some hardcore trail riding – the evidence of which I could spice up this review. What I can tell you though Is that being able to absolutely fly back and forth to work every day, keeping up with the traffic is absolutely brilliant. Nipping into town to meet friends and arriving without being festooned in perspiration is one of life’s small pleasures that only someone else in the same situation will truly understand. Keeping up with the “MAMIL” fraternity (Middle Aged Men In Lycra) on their roadies is also particularly satisfying. So what about the bike? It looks great. The wheels are basically what sold it to me. Sure, you can spend a whole lot less on its little brothers (the RX and RC), but you simply don't get those wheels (Crank Brothers Iodine 2) and you don't get that 11-speed SRAM derailleur. If I had one little gripe, it’s that I actually prefer the frame colour of the RX, or indeed last year’s AMTPro model in matt black. The white frame on the AllMtn Pro shows up every last spec of dirt – and whilst that’s maybe cool after a morning out on the trails...if ever...it’s annoying when all you've done is ridden a few miles into work and back on normal roads. As I say – minor gripe. When it’s all cleaned up, it looks amazing – as hopefully the pictures herewith show. Sorry – no spectacular pictures of me astride the machine on top of a craggy outpost gazing wistfully into a stunning sunset. I work, I have kids, I do domestic things at the weekends! But before you wander off and look for a more dynamic review, bear this in mind. I ride every day in all weathers. The roads are greasy, salty, full of potholes and there are hills where I live. The bike gets a workout twice a day – every day. So far – in five months of pretty grotty weather conditions (November to March) I haven't had a single problem. All you've got to do is keep it clean. The best advice I can offer Is – try one! Martin at e-bikeshop runs a demo day and I happened to come across his blog advert and got myself a last minute place on one of the rides. Go and ride one! Whilst Martin is a good salesman, knowledgeable and personable, he doesn't really need to sell the bikes – they do that all by themselves. If you want to know what it’s like, book an appointment with him and try one – you simply will not be disappointed. There is something visceral about accelerating faster than you know you should be for the effort you are putting in. One of my concerns (besides the initial shock of the price) was whether or not this was just a weekend machine that wouldn't stand up to continuous use from a big lump sat on top. I’m 6’7” and fluctuate around the 110kg mark. I pedal really hard and have a reputation for being generally hard on bikes. Immediately, I felt secure on the demo bike – which was a little bit small for me to be honest – so now that I have one of the large frame models, it suits me down to the ground. The larger frame and superb 27.5” wheels actually make things look at bit more in proportion, too. My concerns have not been realised. As stated above, it still bombs back and forth to work without trouble. To sum it up? There’s nothing more I can say, really except to summarise. An excellent bike from and excellent retailer ….. Go on! You know you want to!! Thanks again to Ian Coleman for this fantastic review. Its great to hear end user feedback and always a pleasure for us to hear how well someone loves their eBike! Our annual 2015 Haibike Demo day was a huge success, we'd say it was our best to date! Here's a report back about how the electric mountain bike demo day panned out. Setting Fortunately due to the location this year, we didn't have to touch much tarmac at all, it was literally straight out the gate and onto the first set of bridleways that lead to the trails at Blackdown. The lovely Strawberry House had everything we could want, it was the perfect for the Haibikes to really be in their element. Briefing Each ride began with an initial briefing to make sure everyone understood where we were going and what we intended to ride. Followed by a product demonstration on how to operate the eBike by Owner Martin Brown. Now to the riding The ride had plenty of climbs as well as some faster downhill. It gave everyone the chance to experience first hand, what the bikes had to offer across the beautiful singletrack at the top of the South Downs. Each ride covered over 1300ft of elevation over approx 1.5 hours. It was pretty up and down, perfect for the electric mountain bikes! Heres what it looked like on the map: One rider had his Strava enabled on the ride and he set over 10 new (unbeatable?) King of the Mountains.. Oooops! In particular the 'Have A Cigar' route where we shaved off 10 seconds. The ride was surprisingly good with no breaks or punctures picked up, which considering there were up to 15 bikes out on each ride was pretty staggering. We did have one minor alteration, but it was quickly resolved. 2015 eBikes available We had a great mixture of bikes available on the day, everything from hardtails to full sussers and even bigger hitting enduro bikes. Among these were great mixture of Bosch / Yamaha equipped bikes, which was perfect for getting a feel for which one suited each rider best. We stopped at a couple of occasions during each ride for people to swap around to get a feel for different models. What a few had to say Many thanks for organising a great demo day yesterday. Both Paul and I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to try out the Haibike in fantastic surroundings - Tony & Paul I just wanted to let you know that we enjoyed our visit to your demo day - Mike Just to thank you for a great day yesterday! Great to ride with other owners and potential owners. I look forward to the next event - Chris Many thanks for a great afternoon I really enjoyed the ride out and meeting the other guys and hearing their experiences - Paul Hey, Really enjoyed yesterday, was nice to be around other eBike riders and the trails were fantastic - Bernie Can I say thank you..... I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday afternoon, and thought you guys did a fantastic job! - Danny Thank you for a really great demo day on Sunday, which my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. - Ken Firstly, thanks for the demo on Sunday, it really was great fun, and it certainly helped me to make up my mind" - David After the ride After each ride we had a de-brief to make sure everyone had a great time and answer any further questions people may have over a nice hot drink. We also had plenty of food available from pizza to salads, thanks to the ladies for running around looking after everyone after each ride! (Particularly as it was Mothers Day!) Everyone really appreciated it. Thank you We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the ride, in particular the guys who travelled down with their own bikes to ride beside us. In all it was a great vibe, a great opportunity to demo the bikes and a good place to network with other Haibike owners alike. We also want to say thank you to Haibike for making such brilliant machines! The passed the test of the Great British trails which can be tough at the best of times. Last but not least we want to say thanks to the owner of Strawberry House who let us host the event there, they also provided great hospitality. A perfect day all round! There are more pictures of the event on our facebook album here & new album here. To everyone on the day, please feel free to tag photos and share as you like. Also check back as its likely more photos will crop up, so we will add these as and when we render them. E-bikeshop are proud to announce that from today we are an authorised Gocycle eBike premium reseller in the South of England on the Hampshire / Surrey border. This means that we will have the full range of electric bikes, all colours and all accessories on the shelf to hand. Gocycle G2 is the worlds first versatile, lightweight and compact electric bike. Its unique approach offers a true riding position despite its compact design. Simple, clean and efficient Director of e-bikeshop Martin Brown says: We are excited to be working alongside Gocycle to promote these eBikes in the UK. After all it is a British design, designed in London by an ex Formula One engineer! At present we are extremely successful with the eMTB, Trekking & Road electric bikes that we already offer, however we have been searching for a while for something that fits alongside our current full sized eBike range, as a stowable bike that can be stored when not in use. This is where the Gocycle fits perfectly (excuse the pun!). The Gocycle G2 also benefits from the fact that you can compact it down and stow it away in confined storage spaces. This is a real benefit over other eBikes, for all those looking to store their lovely cycle, be it in the boat, back of the car, under your desk at work or even under the stairs. Gocycle is the answer! Why we like the Gocycle G2? E-bikeshop took a liking to the neat electric bike after having one on loan for a while and fell in love with the true practicalities of the Gocycle G2. It's so simple to use, you literally just get on and pedal. Everything is worked out beneath you as the electric motor in the front wheel matches perfectly what you are putting into the rear wheel. It means that the power is very balanced and makes it a breeze to cycle around. It's just like riding a regular bike, but you can take your mind away from things like gear changes, power switches etc. and concentrate on what's going on around you. The fact that you can communicate using your mobile phone to control the bike's functions in different ways is really unique! You can read all of the Gocycle G2 features. We expect the Gocycle to be popular among our client base as a nice addition to their existing electric bike collection. We are holding stock of the full Gocycle accessory packs to compliment the eBike perfectly, we offer all sorts of options from commuter packs with mudguards, lights etc. to travel packs with folding pedals and storage / carry cases. Check it out here - Gocycle G2. Expect a full review shortly as we put the Gocycle G2 through its paces. Watch this space!
As you know we are very pro-active in the eBike world, each year we like to do something new to promote the use of eBikes, whilst achieving new records / goals at the same time. Last year you will note we achieved a new eBike world record for the fastest eBike across the Isle of Man TT course, this year is no different as we plan to push the bar one step further. This year's plan is on a slightly longer & larger scale than before as we plan to push the eBikes even further to a possible 20,000km across Europe! We introduce our rider Mr Gary Corbett below, who along with his partner Rachel, will be pushing our Haibike Trekking RX eBikes to the limit over the duration of this new challenge.. Cycling’s Elixir of Youth and the Plan to Set a New World E-Bike Distance Record It’s a scenario all of us are familiar with as we get older … no matter how hard you train and no matter how hard you try, you are no longer able to replicate the physical achievements of your youth. Gary and Rachel Corbett - the E-Bike Cycle Tourists - set off from London in late April in a bid to set a new world record for the longest ever e-bike journey. Sure, the head may be older and wiser, but the body just isn’t up to the physical challenges of 10, 20, 30 or even more years ago. To put it bluntly it is a fact of life we all have to come terms with – ageing sucks. But thanks to new technology there is a solution – in the cycling world at least – that not only helps 40, 50, 60, and 70 year olds cycle as far and as with as much vigour as they did in their youth, but even helps people with health and physical problems ride a bicycle often for the first time in years. The elixir of youth for ageing cyclists and anyone else keen to enjoy the thrill of cycling, is an electric bike – otherwise known as e-bikes or pedelecs – and despite pockets of cynicism and derision from (mostly young) cyclists who see e-bikes as no more than battery powered motorbikes, the fact of the matter is that e-bikes are very quickly becoming the new frontier in the cycling world. As an aside, it would be interesting to be able to peer into a crystal ball to see how many gung-ho 20 and 30-something cyclists of today who ridicule anyone who rides an e-bike actually take to riding one in the future when they themselves start to suffer from aching joints or weight and health problems. Huge Advances in E-Bike Technology Such has been the huge leap in e-bike technology and design over the past 10 or so years that the quality of electric bikes has gone from nothing short of a bad joke to cutting-edge technology in the wake of manufacturing giants such as Bosch, Yamaha, Panasonic, and Shimano taking up the challenge to develop state-of-the-art e-bike electric motors and highly advanced battery systems. With hundreds of bicycle manufacturers now incorporating this new technology into their bicycle designs, millions of people around the world are now reaping the born again benefits of e-bike riding. Included in that ever-growing list of e-bike converts are my wife Rachel and I – from now on known as the E-Bike Cycle Tourists – who would never have entertained the thought of riding an electrically assisted bicycle just a few short years ago. But times and attitudes change and like those millions of people worldwide who have jumped on the e-bike bandwagon, we just love them. To cut a long story short, our transformation from knowing nothing about e-bikes to becoming nothing short of e-bike ambassadors basically goes something like this. A career newspaper journalist, I was made redundant from a leading Australian newspaper company – as have far too many other journos worldwide in this internet obsessed world. What to do? Reinvent myself of course! Now a few short years down the track thanks to the burgeoning organised cycle touring industry, I have written two e-books on the subject and am contracted to a number of organised cycle tour companies to write blogs, feature articles and to generally improve their written website content. And what do you do if your job is to write about cycle tourism – go cycle touring of course! Never one to sit around and do nothing, my “fact finding” tours over the past few years have seen me ride well in excess of 30,000kms completing guided, self-guided, bike and barge and solo long distance cycle tours in Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. But what about Rachel? While she was able to complete some of the shorter guided and bike and barge tours, the longer self-supported tours that require carrying anything up to 25kg of gear on traditional touring bikes were, to put it simply, too physically demanding for her to come along. With the lure of another long distance cycle tour beckoning in 2015, a solution had to be found to the problem that would allow both of us to ride together. The solution? An e-bike! Given that you can use as little or as much electric assist as you want while you peddle on an electric bicycle, they provide the perfect solution for Rachel to be able to effectively iron out the hills and to tame annoying headwinds. With electric bicycles providing the answer to enable us to complete a long distance self-supported cycle tour together, and promote our love of a clean environment at the same time, the planning for an extended cycle tour was taken one giant step further – to set a new world e-bike long distance record. After all, how dull would life be if you didn’t get out of your comfort zone every now and then! And that, in a long winded way, is the story behind the E-Bike Cycle Tourists’ World E-Bike Long Distance Record attempt. Follow us as we try to better the current unofficial world record of 16,047kms – the official Guinness World Records record is a measly 6721kms – over the course of about 12 months of cycling in the United Kingdom, Europe and Scandinavia. It should prove to be an amazing journey! We will be blogging up to and during the new challenge, so please make sure to pop back and follow this exciting journey.

The demo day will be held at Strawberry House, West Sussex. We will email full directions and details for all those who successfully register a place ahead of the ride. Half way round there will be an opportunity to swap bikes with others so you can try more than one eBike. We will have a mix of the latest Haibike sDuro (Yamaha) & xDuro (Bosch) 2015 electric mountain bikes to hand. Please Note: We will be taking you OFF ROAD, so please bring appropriate clothing, helmet (mandatory) & gloves. Also, spare change of clothes would be good for your travels home. If you require the use of SPD shoes, please feel free to bring your shoes and pedals along and we can fit them prior to the ride. However this may negate your opportunity to swap bikes half way round. Sunday 15th March 2015: THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED!!
